Gardener's Supply chose Demandware eCommerce because it provided built-in, revenue-generating features proven to lift conversion rates. "Ecommerce is our best performing channel and we had simply outgrown our old ecommerce vendor," said Max Harris, manager of electronic marketing, Gardener's Supply. To begin the vendor selection process, Gardener's Supply created an internal task force to review 100 ecommerce sites and identified 20 new 'must have' revenue-driving features. Implementing these new features on its old platform would have been a prohibitively expensive and lengthy project. The company began an extensive search for an ecommerce partner to re-launch its site. While evaluating the top seven ecommerce vendors, Gardener's Supply found that traditional solutions - both packaged applications and those hosted with an application service provider (ASP) or outsourcer - lacked the most innovative features, required extensive customization, or were too expensive to operate.
"Retailers that are seeking on-demand ecommerce software solutions will need to distinguish hype from reality," said Amy Konary, program director for Software Pricing, Licensing, and Delivery at IDC.
